Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) — preparation checklist

Before you start

  1. Confirm passport country and age eligibility

In general terms, this visa is open to passport holders from a defined set of partner countries and within a published age range. Confirm on the official Home Affairs page whether the passport and age situation qualify; a registered practitioner can advise on borderline cases.

Documents commonly requested

  1. Current passport from a Working Holiday eligible country

A colour scan of the photo page of your valid passport is generally the first document attached. Check that the passport will remain valid well beyond your planned travel, and that the name and details match what you enter everywhere else.

  2. Evidence of any change of name

If you have ever used a different name, applicants typically gather documents that link the names, such as a marriage certificate, deed poll or official name-change record.

  3. Personal bank statement showing your savings

The application generally asks for evidence of funds to support yourself for the initial period of your stay. A recent personal bank statement in your own name is the document most commonly attached for this.

  4. Evidence of onward or departure travel funds

Alongside savings for your stay, applicants are typically expected to show they can pay for travel out of Australia at the end of the visit — for example funds visible in the same bank statement or a booked onward ticket.

  5. Specified-work records for a second or third application

If this is your second or third Working Holiday visa, gather records of the specified work you completed in Australia — pay slips, payment summaries, superannuation records and employer details are the items generally used.

  6. Health examination results, if you are asked for them

Health checks are not always required, but the Department may request an examination depending on your circumstances and travel history. Keep any referral letters and results together in case they are requested.

  7. Police certificates, if you are asked for them

Character documents such as police certificates are generally only needed if requested. If you have lived in several countries, it can help to note where you have spent significant time so certificates are easier to obtain if asked.

  8. Certified English translations of any non-English documents

Any supporting document that is not in English typically needs an English translation prepared by an appropriately qualified translator, attached together with a copy of the original.

Lodging the application

  1. Lodge the application through ImmiAccount

A first Working Holiday visa is generally lodged from outside Australia.

After lodging

  1. Track the application and respond to any requests

After lodgement, the Department may request further information or material. Monitor the ImmiAccount, keep documents current, and respond within any stated timeframes. Processing times vary; the official page is the source for current estimates.
