Subclass 190
Skilled Nominated visa preparation checklist
A general list of the steps and documents commonly involved. It is the same for every reader, does not assess eligibility for any person and is not advice. The official Home Affairs page and the ImmiAccount checklist decide what an application needs.
Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated — preparation checklist
Before you start
- Confirm your occupation appears on the relevant skilled list
In general terms, this stream requires an occupation on the applicable skilled occupation list. Lists change over time, so check the current official lists and consider how your occupation maps to them.
- Obtain a skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority
Each occupation has a designated assessing authority. A suitable skills assessment is typically required before lodgement, and assessments may have a validity period.
- Sit an accepted English language test
Evidence of English language ability is generally part of skilled applications. Check which tests and results are currently accepted.
- Submit an Expression of Interest and pursue state or territory nomination
The process typically starts with an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect, followed by seeking nomination from a state or territory under its own criteria. Record any reference numbers you receive.
Documents commonly requested
- Gather identity documents
Assemble current identity documents such as your passport. Certified translations are commonly needed for anything not in English.
- Collect employment and qualification evidence
Records that support the claims in your Expression of Interest, such as references, position descriptions and qualification documents, are generally assembled before lodgement.
- Arrange character (police) checks
Character checks from relevant countries are commonly required. Processing times vary, so allow time for these.
Lodging the application
- Lodge the visa application after receiving an invitation
A visa application is generally lodged online only after an invitation to apply is held.
After lodging
- Complete any health examinations requested
Health examinations with an approved provider are often requested as part of processing. Follow the specific instructions provided after lodgement.
- Respond to any requests and monitor your application
After lodgement, further information may be requested. Keep your contact details current and respond within any stated timeframes.
