Subclass 494 — preparation and lodgement checklist

Before you start

  1. Confirm the sponsorship and nomination pathway

In general terms, check that an approved regional business is willing to sponsor and has (or will lodge) an approved nomination for the role. This visa typically depends on the employer steps being in place. Check the official page for how the sponsorship, nomination and visa stages connect, and a registered practitioner can advise on the pathway.

  2. Check occupation, skills and English in broad terms

Typically the nominated occupation needs to fit this visa's skilled occupation arrangements, a skills assessment may be required, and competent English is usually expected. Specific occupation lists, standards and exemptions change over time — confirm current requirements on the official page or with a registered practitioner.

Documents commonly requested

  1. Passport and identity documents

The pages of your current passport that show your photo, personal details and issue/expiry dates are typically needed, along with a birth certificate or national identity document. If your name has changed, documents showing the change (such as a marriage certificate) are generally included too.

  2. Recent passport-style photograph

A recent photograph of yourself, passport-style with a plain background, is generally requested for each person included in an application.

  3. Nomination details from the regional employer

This visa is tied to an approved employer nomination. Applicants typically keep the nomination transaction reference number and any letter or offer of employment from the sponsoring regional business, since the sponsorship and nomination steps generally come before the visa application itself.

  4. Skills assessment

A skills assessment outcome for the nominated occupation, issued by the relevant assessing authority, is typically required for the Employer Sponsored stream. Keep the full outcome letter and its reference number together.

  5. Work experience evidence

Documents showing your employment history in the nominated occupation — such as reference letters on company letterhead, employment contracts, payslips or tax records — are generally gathered to support the work experience you record.

  6. Qualifications and transcripts

Certificates and academic transcripts for the qualifications you have listed are typically included, especially where they relate to the nominated occupation or were relied on for your skills assessment.

  7. English test results

A test report from a recognised English language test (for example IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET or Cambridge C1 Advanced) is generally provided. Some passport holders record passport details instead where a test is not needed — keep whichever applies to you.

  8. Family member documents

For a partner or children included with you, documents such as a marriage certificate, evidence of a de facto relationship, and birth certificates for children are typically gathered, along with each family member's passport identity pages.

  9. Health examination records

Health examinations are generally arranged through the Department's own process with an approved panel clinic. Keep any referral letter or HAP ID you are issued so results can be matched to your application.

  10. Police certificates

Police certificates are generally requested from Australia and from each country where you have spent a significant period (typically 12 months or more in the last ten years). Family members over a certain age included in the application typically need them as well.

  11. Certified English translations

Any document not in English is generally accompanied by an English translation prepared by a qualified translator, with the translator's credentials noted. Keep the original-language document and its translation together.

Lodging the application

  1. Lodge the visa application online

The visa application is generally lodged online through the applicant's own ImmiAccount once the employer nomination position is settled. Use the official ImmiAccount portal and the official page's instructions rather than any third-party form. A registered practitioner can advise on timing.

After lodging

  1. Respond to requests and track the application

After lodging, the Department may request further information, health checks or biometrics. In general terms, keep contact details current and respond through official channels. Check the official page for current processing guidance and a registered practitioner can advise on next steps.
