Subclass 601
Electronic Travel Authority preparation checklist
A general list of the steps and documents commonly involved. It is the same for every reader, does not assess eligibility for any person and is not advice. The official Home Affairs page and the ImmiAccount checklist decide what an application needs.
Subclass 601 ETA — short-stay preparation checklist
Before you start
- Confirm the passport is ETA-eligible
In general terms, the ETA is only open to holders of passports the Department has designated as eligible, and the list changes over time. Check the current eligible-passport list on the official page; a registered practitioner can advise where it is unclear or where another pathway (such as the eVisitor) may fit better.
- Check the visit fits a short tourist or business-visitor purpose
The ETA is typically intended for short holidays, visiting family, cruises or business-visitor activities, not for work or long-term stays. Confirm the intended purpose and length broadly align with what the ETA allows before going further; defer specifics to the official page and a practitioner.
- Note health and character expectations
Visitor pathways generally carry standard health and character expectations. Where a person has matters such as prior criminal history, the ETA may not be the right pathway. This is a personal assessment best made with a registered practitioner; check the official page for current requirements.
Documents commonly requested
- Have a valid passport and a current email address ready
Typically a valid passport (with its photo/biodata page) and an accessible email address are needed, since the outcome is usually delivered electronically. Confirm the passport's validity window on the official page.
- Prepare a device able to capture identity verification
In general terms the official app captures passport details and a live photo for identity verification, so a compatible mobile device with a working camera is commonly required. A live photo or selfie is part of this; check the official app for current device and photo requirements.
Lodging the application
- Apply through the official Australian ETA app
Unlike most Australian visas, the ETA is typically lodged through the official Australian ETA app rather than ImmiAccount or a web form, generally from outside Australia, with the per-person service charge paid in the app. Use only the official app; a registered practitioner can advise on individual circumstances.
After lodging
- Watch for the outcome and any request for more information
Outcomes are usually sent by email and often arrive quickly, though some applications take longer or need further information. Keep the email address accessible and respond to any official request. Check the official page for current processing guidance.
