Permanent residents reminded to check their travel facility before leaving Australia
Subclass 155 · Resident Return visa
Correction — replaces an earlier item
In short: permanent residents should check their travel facility before leaving Australia, or they may not be able to fly back.
What changed
A permanent visa does not let you re-enter Australia without a valid travel facility, which usually lasts one or five years. Home Affairs advises checking your travel facility and passport link in VEVO before departing, and applying early for a Resident Return visa (subclass 155 or 157) if the facility will expire before you return. Airlines cannot board a permanent resident without a valid travel facility or Resident Return visa linked to the passport used. Home Affairs warns against coming back on a Visitor visa or ETA instead, because it can affect citizenship eligibility, permanent residence status and entitlements.
Who it affects
Permanent residents planning travel outside Australia.
